September 11, 2005Bikini Brawl ReportI went to the Bikini Brawl charity event in Van Nuys at Shenanigans and it was totally odd. It was supposed to start at 5pm and I got there at 5:25 and nothing was happening. The weirdest part was trying to get in and just buy a ticket. I approached the building and this paramilitary-soldier type guy in sunglasses (he had on a turtleneck sweater, some fake looking Barney Fife police badge, and holster with a gun in it) came up to me and said,'Can I help you?' I told him I'd like to buy a ticket to the event and that I'd like to take photos for a news story. We went through the rigmarole of who are you, who are you shooting for, etc, and then he passed me off to another paramilitary type, who made me go through the same thing and asked for a card. He escorted me inside and passed me off the manager who took me to the VIP area and told me that was the only area where I could photograph, that I couldn't photograph the house dancers or patrons, I could only photograph the porn stars. That was all fine with me, but where were the porn stars advertised as coming to the event? I only saw two in the audience, Jasmine Byrne(a red hot newcomer starring in Jules Jordan's 'Slut Puppies') and male friend and Reina Leoni and hubby Joe Friday. I asked Reina if she was in the Bikini Brawl and she made a face and said,'no'. There was a rep from Playboy TV who was seated in the same area as me and he had boxes of DVDS, which I presumed to be giveaways. We chatted a bit and at 6pm, he asked me,'There is supposed to be a Bikini Brawl today, right?' I told him yes, but it was an hour after the supposed start time. Some more photographers showed up and they were seated in a different area. Later, one of them came over and said,'You'd better come with us, because the manager is going to tell us where we can photograph.' I thought to myself,'I though that was already established.' I followed him and the other photographers and manager to a back area. Once we got to the area, the manager apologized for 'forgetting me' and put his arm around me. He smelled like alcohol. He then told After that, I went to the ladies room and when I went returned to the back area, the other photographers were snapping shots of Reina Leoni. One of the paramilitary soldiers hurried over, alerted because of all the flashes going off, and called over the manager. They conferred for a moment and the manager nodded his approval to the soldier that it was alright for the photographers to be taking photos. There was a brief break and then one of the photographers saw Jasmine Byrne sitting at a table, so he brought her back to be photographed. This time the female bartender scurried to the back after seeing all the flashes going off and called the manager over. He told her that it was allowed and they both went back to their posts. At this point, it was 6:35 and none of the girls advertised as being in the Bikini Brawl had arrived. I had called the club (Shenanigans in Van Nuys) before coming over, because I couldn''t find the address on Mapquest (it turned out that the press release had printed the wrong address for the club) and they gave me the correct address and told me that the Bikini Brawl was from 5 to 7 pm. I left a bit after 6:35 and saw Reina Leoni and Joe Friday leaving as well. It was an 'odd' event to say the least. There wasn't a huge crowd at all. When I arrived, I saw a crowd of guys standing outside waiting to see which porn girls were going to come but they never entered the club. Inside, there was a guy dressed in what I can only describe as a pimp suit who had some ladies with him. I saw two customers throw some money on the stage at the girl dancing. Besides the porn performers and their dates, security, photographers, and the people I mentioned previously, the club was empty. Links
