This was my first visit to Los Angeles Webmaster Access, although I am a local.
My overall impression of the event is that it is less about networking and business and more about partying based on the overall behavior of the participants (tons of people who were constantly drinking alcohol starting midday and onward) and somewhat sparsely attended seminars.
No group epitomized drunk behavior more than the employees from the QuickBuck affiliate program. This group turned a chartered bus that was to take conference attendees back to the hotel from the Lucky Strike Bowling lounge into their own personal party bus. There were twelve of them. One employee jumped in the front seat of the bus next to the drive and turned up the volume on the radio so high that the walls of the vehicle started to vibrate. Two female employees stood at the front of the bus dancing and simulating a sex act. Another QuickBuck employee named Brett, became very belligerant with an attendee who requested that the music be turned down.
Later, when the bus arrived back at the convention venue, QuickBuck employee Brett, got off the bus and again belligerantly attacked the person who complained about his company's behavior on the bus. This led to the victim calling the police. The situation worsened after the police were called when several QuickBuck employees tried to attack the victim causing the Sheraton Universal staff to step in and offer protection.
Another noteworthy element of Webmaster Accesss Los Angeles is that the final social event of the conference, a party at the Playboy mansion on Friday night, is 'invitation' only; not all conference attendees are invited, so the fun ends for some on the second night of the event, because there are no other convention parties scheduled that particular night. Overall, that particular aspect comes off as a way for people to play politics by inviting some and excluding others; this feature is absent from other webmaster conventions.
